Which desktop do you run on freebsd/linux

On FreeBSD - twm. On Linux - default DE (don't care, I use it as bhyve VM guest only).
This isn't entirely true. I use Debian 13 as a host for VMware guests (Windows 11, Windows XP). I've always used GNOME (as the default DE). Now I've switched to twm there. And I'm quite happy. ;)

MG what do you want to change. (Should probably be a separate thread though.)
The alt-tab pager shouldn't change the task order everytime and should give numbers to tasks with the same name and icon, like xterm windows. Also, showing tiny desktop thumbnails in the pager would be nice.

KDE Plasma 6 + Kronhkite tiling extension. I get the best of both worlds: a modern DE with all the bells and whistles + a true window tiling manager that provides the experience one expects from window tiling.

One pet peeve of mine, though, is conflating Linux and FreeBSD. When I discovered FreeBSD (BSD in general) I overcame Linux.

I did my config on fvwm2 before 3 was released. When I switched to 3 my 2er config did not produce the exact 100% same result on 3. There are some mismatches with my multihead setup, and some few other minor things.
Over the years I've gone more and more minimalist, so that may explain why I barely noticed the switch. That and maybe having a single-screen setup. As I understand it, there has been some work done related to multihead systems.

So I switched back to 2. Worx. I am satisfied. Does all I need. Don't miss anything. End of story.
Edit: fvwm2 has another big advantage: It's not being developed anymore.
Fair enough. For me, it's the opposite. I like it when developers continue maintaining the code and remain dedicated to the vision. Keep in mind the history of fvwm as a derivative of twm. In a way, it's similar to FreeBSD.
Also, aside from the bug fixes and new features, there has been a lot of cleanup work done (dead code and deprecated functions) in version 3. That may anger some people, but when the code is FUBARed it has to go some day eventually.

This means I don't need to worry about that one day with some new version suddenly my config breaks, or otherwise my desktop will not work anymore like I'm used to, because some developer(s) decided to change something (e.g. "let's make the config file in XML." 🤬)
The development of fvwm has been quite steady and conservatively slow. With only a few people (mainly Thomas Adam) having contributed most of the code for the past two decades of so, I doubt we'll see any drastic changes such as an XML config file any time soon.
One thing I like about it is how stable it is and how it silently ignores configuration errors instead of crashing or failing to start like many other programs do. In fact, in all these years of daily use, I don't remember it ever crashing on me.

* xfce4 on FreeBSD and Arch
* windowmaker on my old netbook with FreeBSD and on cygwin when i have to use windows
* sometimes plasma when I'm in the mood to do this
