ZFS Using zfs as a Subsystem

This may be a silly question, but still the best place to ask...
I have FreeBSD 12-Release running with a ufs, can I add a zfs partition to it? And does it make sense?

Yes. Although I don't recommend using UFS and ZFS on the same disk. But it's perfectly fine to add a 4 disk RAID-Z ZFS pool for example to an existing UFS installation.

And does it make sense?
This was my set up for a long time when ZFS was still very new, I wasn't comfortable yet to use it as a root filesystem.

I think using UFS with ZFS arrays is the best way to learn, even if you only use one drive for ZFS
I currently have UFS stipe/mirror arrays graid3(5disks) and 2 NVMe gmirror'ed and a ZFS pool on the same machine.
The raid flexibility is serving me very well.
