Solved Undefined symbol ThreadRuneLocale

This is 9.2 x86 install.
Server has worked fine since install.
It is not a production server but rather a play/lab machine.

I believe I ran freebsd-update on this machine and then forgot about it.

Now when booting I see:
Code: 
Undefined symbol "_ThreadRuneLocale"
with seemingly ever process that starts up.

When I try to log in a multi-user session, from console, as root, I get:
Code: 
/usr/lib/libpam.so.5: Undefined symbol "fdlopen"

and brings me back to login prompt.

I don't have a lot of experience working on these kind of FreeBSD issues, so I was
curious if anyone had a clue as to what is going on and what next steps you might take.

Well, that seems rather obvious.

For future reference: I had to boot into single user mode and then ran
mount -u /
freebsd-update rollback
