Unable to boot 13.5 or 14.2 installer on Macbook Pro 17" (2008 MacBookPro14,1)

Hello all,

I've been given a laptop (Macbook Pro 17") which would be a great clunker to sit in a corner of my workshop for the occasional use. However, when I tried to boot the -13.5 or -14.2 installer from a memory stick, the boot seems to get stuck after the boot menu screen.
On -13.5, my results are the same as the person in this thread. On -14.3, my results are as show here:

Yes, I have tried all three settings of copy_staging (enabled, disabled, auto) on -14.2.

The loader prompt (OK) says that this laptop does not have GOP (Generic Output Protocol) nor does it have UGA (Universal Graphics Adapter). I wonder if it is actually booted, but I can't see anything due to a missing console. I do have a firewire cable on the way and will be trying dcons/dconschat as soon as that arrives.

Has anyone been successful in getting one of these old beasts to run with -14.x?

I forgot to mention: I _am_ able to boot -12.4 normally, which is how I was able to get that dmesg, pciconf, and sysctl dump generated.

This bug report could be related to my boot woes.
