Trying to dd a SSD via usb connection

I have a sata to usb cable that I wish to use to dd an ssd. I have the drive connected to a freebsd-14.2 host but dmesg does not report any recognition of the drive. Am I missing a step,or is the cable unusable for this purpose,or is what I wish to do not possible?

The alternative is to open the case and run a sata cable directly from the motherboard. I would like to avoid doing that if possible.

it is very possible
either the cable is bad, the usb port does not supply enough power or the enclosure is not supported by freebsd
but it should appear to the os as an usb mass storage / daN.

The cable is new bought for this purpose. That does not mean that it is not defective but it seems unlikely. Both power and access LEDs on the SATA end light up when connected to a USB port. I have to get this clone done so I have taken the lid off one of our hosts and connected the drive directly to the MB. PIA but I have a deadline to meet.

The SATA drive is an SSD. It doesn't draw a lot of power. There is no spin-up surge.

In any case I have ditched that entire approach and simply added the ssd to an existing host. I have dd cloned the original and I am now transferring the clone image to another, identical, ssd.

I will see how things go.

For things that are "disk drives" I've always preferred something like this instead of a straight cable:

Take care with USB cables nowadays, there are so-called "charging" USB cables that only have the power pins connected, the two data pins aren't connected. You can't tell the difference just by looking at the cable itself. Those charging cables can't be used for data.

usb to sata enclosures have weird plug type at the enclosure's end, like a micro + mini usb (micro USB-B) ? i doubt they make them power only but you never know
