Typically I set dumpdev="AUTO" in rc.conf to enable it at boot. Following a crash you will find the dump in /var/crash.

Just wanted to say thanks for everyone's assistance. I've "fixed" the issue by installing 13.1 RELEASE in place of 14 CURRENT (it seems the network card is now supported in 13.1), swapped the faulty drive out for a spare, and resilvered the zpool. Thankfully I was able to import the existing zpool into the new OS so recovered the existing data, which is nice. All-in-all it took about a day to complete the task (resilvering happened over night before the OS reinstall). System is back to stable.
