Solved Source Code and Update/Upgrade

Hello,

I just installed FreeBSD for the first time. I did not set the option to have the source code during the installation process and I am grabbing it usig svn (release engineering) right now.

The question that remain is if using freebsd-update tool it will also update the source code? Or, the source code should be updated/upgraded in separate?

PS. my objective is to use ports instead of pkg.

Hello lebarondemerde and welcome to FreeBSD!

If you are sticking to RELEASE versions, then your source code will be updated whenever you run freebsd-update(8). However, if you switch to STABLE or CURRENT, then you'll need to use svn(1). Whether or not you compile the base system yourself doesn't affect your ability to use ports(7) or pkg(8).
