Social Media

Well, to pull out a specific example: https://www.statista.com/statistics/410943/london-public-transport-crimes-by-mode/

So London Transport, a network of busses, trains and underground which is peppered with CCTV - and recorded crime is rising rather than falling.

So you have nearly a decade of cuts to policing and social care, cuts to mental health services, youth services, overflowing prisons and the answer is of course, still to throw more money at surveillance...

...
Sadly ANPR is only advancing and being extended in the UK. Unlike the US, there is really nobody interested in fighting the fight for privacy and pushing back against the onset of these Orwellian technologies. I think it's been said that we have more CCTV here than anywhere else in the world.

Isn't it interesting that the author of 1984 was an Indian/Englishman person (real name Eric Blair)? I think part of the problem with England is that it has no constitution. Is that still a correct statement? Anyway, one of those fancy documents tends to slow down the march of such things as we're talking about here - but eventually it seems that founding papers get put into museums and shoved aside anyway. :( I think the real problem is part of the human genome.

Government is not to be mistaken as general therapist and full service institution. During 99.99% of history people had to eat just the beet they had planted themselves. And the problems started after that was no longer the case.

Today I'm celebrating a little over two months free of social media. I deleted FB on February 18th. I also deleted my FB account back in 2019. The addictive pull of social media is insidious. I'm hopeful that this time I can walk away for good. I think some people can use social media in a responsible way. I always end up going down a rabbit hole and I feel anxious. Technology forums are my form of social media these days. :)

I never had a Facebook account... I already heard horror stories of how stupid stuff people posted on MySpace (if anyone is old enough to remember THAT) came back to bite, and hard. And even Zuckerberg himself was amazed at how moronic people are - the early users of Facebook made posts that were just as foolish as anything on MySpace... ... for everyone to see, really.

Thanks to that, I decided, no way, the effort it would take to curate my Facebook profile is just not worth it, I'd rather direct my attention to something else...

'Off-Topic' section of FreeBSD Forums (and FreeBSD Discord, too) are my form of Social Media... that's because they have no ads (Well, Discord kind of does, but not out of control), and they attracted the kind of crowd where I can actually have a conversation, rather than a mud-slinging contest to see who can post the most insulting Pepe meme.

I can tell you some horror stories of what stupid stuff some people post on this forum too, if you like :p
Snarky comment - point being: People generate stupid content no matter the format or medium. Therefore, that also applies to FreeBSD related content and this forum. Here we just have awesome staff members and the lack of corporate interests to promote "stupid stuff".

This is true. I sometimes make comments about Microsoft that are a bit over the top because I don't personally care for them. Lol

The only reason I have a Facebook account is cause I went to a funeral and found out some distant relatives talked to each other on that and encouraged me to join. I friended eight of them. Three are no longer active there so I'm down to five. And they rarely post anything.

Now, for reasons I don't know, all I see are mostly advertisements and soft porn. Why I'm seeing the porn, I don't know.

I ever wondered why the elderly are so reluctant leaving FB. Now I know. :)
And FB is cheaper than the blue pills.

You can encourage them to use net-im/telegram-desktop instead of Facebook. Telegram is open source and secure, it's available on many platforms and it's very easy for anyone to use. You can simply create a group and have a conversation there. In addition, unlike Facebook and Twitter, you no longer see the yellow content that people produce on these social networks.

I think the porn must have come from some movie site I must have clicked on that seemed innocent enough but wasn't. Then all the ad companies got their bought links to my account and there ya go.

I now only check my account once a week, on the weekend, in case they post something I should know.

I rarely see anything I need to know.

getopt Nope. Don't install anything I don't find useful. These ad companies can send me all the stuff they want but I won't click on them. Any site I visit that has lots of ads on them won't get my attention either cause it's obvious, from the ads, they can't survive on the quality of their content.

Absolutely,

In the end, each of us has 1-20 good friends in the real world
The rest is must. You're just wasting your time
and the smugglers steal your data.

Smart people always notice.

I'm working on finishing a project for communication. It's meant for hosting on your own server. I've been working on it for a couple of years. I'm almost done. Been almost done for about six months now.
