sendmail: MX record loop problem I can't figure out

I am transitioning a mailserver to a new FreeBSD install. The configuration is / should be almost identical. Should be easy, right?

I get "schlepper sendmail[10502]: 67TIXqoB010502: SYSERR(cracauer): MX list for knight.cons.org points back to schlepper.hanse.de". Zone is cons.org.

But both knight.cons.org and schlepper.hanse.de are in /etc/mail/local-host-names. Why doesn't that terminate the search? Why doesn't that just trigger local delivery?

this is what you get when the DNS MX points to your host but the domain is not in the Cw class (ie /etc/mail/sendmail.cw or /etc/mail/local-host-names

As I said, both are in local-host-names and show up when testing the Cw macro.

unless you did not restart sendmail after modifying local-host-names I have no explanation

OK, new detail.

The above rejection and message appears only when using mail(1) on the command line.

Mail coming in via SMTP for the same addresses in cons.org work fine and are delivered as they should.

Now I am even more confused.
