Reliable USB flash drives

Phison controllers are notoriously unreliable and known for locking up or dying in a multitude of failure modes. There are several tools and *a lot* of guides available on how one can try to revive a locked up phison-based usb drive (and even SSDs).

Most of the web links that I've seen are for a site in Russia for tools that run on Windows. I'm not so short of money that I'm going to consider trying that.
 
A thought, what if you dd the raw drive of the same model to a file? Theoretically, you could restore the drive by dd'ing it back.
Also a comment on why you used such a big drive when the image would fit on something much smaller? Kinda like ordering a shot of an alcoholic beverage and having it served in a 5 gallon bucket. :rolleyes: The epitome of a small install image is OpenBSD's miniroot.fs - comes in at 5.6MB and none of the USB install images are bigger than 1GB
