Solved Radeon HD 6320 with X.org under FreeBSD

Hello Forum Members,
I am considering to buy a HP T610 Thin Client and I was wondering if its on-board Radeon HD 6320 can be used for a decent Desktop with the radeon X.org driver. The documentation of that driver does not mention the HD 6320, but it does include the HD 6310 (under PALM) and HD 6520 and HD 6620 (under SUMO).
An hour of DuckDuckGoing brought multiple results on various Linux distros successfully installed on the HP T610 and similar Thin Clients, but they seem to use a closed-source binary Radeon driver package for their X Desktop, hence my doubts about the subject.
If you have hands-on experience with a Radeon HD 6320 under FreeBSD, I would like to hear about it.

If it works properly with the KMS driver you will have a "decent" (for some values of "decent") X Desktop.

So I bought one of those HP T610 thin clients for a low price, and started experimenting with it. Things look very promising, and it may turn out to be a lovely quiet FreeBSD Xorg workstation.
Code:
root@t610:~ # pciconf -lv | grep -B3 display
vgapci0@pci0:0:1:0: class=0x030000 card=0x17e2103c chip=0x98061002 rev=0x00 hdr=0x00
vendor = 'Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI]'
device = 'Wrestler [Radeon HD 6320]'
    class      = display

I added kld_list="radeonkms fuse" to /etc/rc.conf and rebooted.
The console properly switched to the native resolution of my LCD which I set in /boot/loader.conf for vt(4).
After login, this is what kldstat shows.
Code:

By the way, I do have drm-legacy-kmod installed, and still keep getting those console messages instructing me to install it.

After pkg install xorg xf86-video-amdgpu and startx, Xorg's log indicated that the amdgpu driver found no graphics device it could drive and the X display kept showing up using the vesa driver.

Next step was pkg remove xf86-video-amdgpu && pkg install xf86-video-radeon.

With the radeon driver X seems to find a graphics device it likes as "AMD Radeon HD 6300 Series Graphics" (ChipID = 0x9806), and according to the logfiles everything is good now.

... except for the fun fact that I can see nothing but blank black screen on both LCD panels. I have two panels because initially it seemed as X is starting on the DisplayPort even though I had my LCD connected to the DVI port and I later specifically told X about this in xorg.conf. So I attached a second display to the DisplayPort, only to realize that neither of the two shows my X Desktop. :(

When I run startx and the two panels go dark, I blindly typed in xrandr > xrandr.txt to see what X believes to be happening. Here it is.
Code:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 8192 x 8192
DisplayPort-0 connected primary (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
   1280x1024 60.02 +
   1152x864 75.00
   1024x768 75.08 70.07 60.00
   832x624 74.55
   800x600 72.19 75.00 60.32 56.25
   640x480 75.00 72.81 66.67 60.00
   720x400 70.08
DVI-0 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
   1024x768 60.00 + 75.08 70.07
   832x624 74.55
   800x600 72.19 75.00 60.32 56.25
   640x480 75.00 72.81 66.67 60.00
   720x400 70.08
VGA-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

So it does believe everything to be working fine. But I see nothing but blank screens, then I must press Ctrl+Alt+Fx to go back to vt and press Ctrl+C to stop X.

For reference, here is the xorg.conf I used for the above results.

Any suggestion on why my X display is not shown on my LCD panels or what to try to get it working?

Hi,

having a xorg.conf is considered as deprecated, i'd try to remove it completey and only load the driver in rc.conf.

By the way, I do have drm-legacy-kmod installed, and still keep getting those console messages instructing me to install it.
This is because the gfx driver pulls in the old drm driver from /boot/kernel/drm* automatically. You should add the drm driver to rc.conf too with the path to /boot/modules/drm*

I had the same problem and changed it to look like this (i use Intel driver):
Code:
kld_list="/boot/modules/drm2.ko /boot/modules/i915kms.ko"

Thanks noob for pointing out the need for using the /boot/modules/xxx.ko path format in rc.conf. This has eluded me until now. Also, I did not realize I have /boot/modules/ next to /boot/kernel/ instead of having files updated in /boot/kernel/, so immediately two details you managed to update me on. Appreciated!

With the rc.conf line improved to kld_list="/boot/modules/drm2.ko /boot/modules/radeonkms.ko fuse" I now have the attached dmesg. I believe I can safely ignore the
Code:
radeon/PALM_pfp.bin: could not load firmware image, error 2
radeon/PALM_me.bin: could not load firmware image, error 2
radeon/SUMO_rlc.bin: could not load firmware image, error 2
lines, as two lines further the mentioned firmware images all seem to get loaded successfully.
I do not know if I should be concerned about the
Code:
drmn0: error: No GEM object associated to handle 0x00000400, can't create framebuffer
lines, what they actually mean, or what action generated them.

Xorg.0.log now shows what is also attached. Notice that I disconnected the Samsung LCD from DVI-0, commented out its Option "Monitor-DVI-0" line from xorg.conf too. Still the same issue. The system believes everything is fine, but my screen is blank dark when startx is run.

Promising lines in Xorg.0.log are

Suggestions, pointers are more than welcome.

Raffeale's above post led to the solution.
The Radeon HD 6320 graphics of the HP T610 Thin Client now works fine under FreeBSD 12.1R/amd64 and X.Org using the radeonkms.ko and drm.ko modules built from source. Another Thin Client, a HP T630 with its AMD R5/R6/R7 graphics also works fine, using the amdgpu.ko and drm.ko modules from the same build.
The three important steps to remember when you want to get these working:
  • For FreeBSD 12.1 you need to download and build the Kernel Mode Settings modules from a particular github source. This is not available as a package, neither is available in the ports tree. I am still puzzled on why this is.
  • Both the HP T610 and the HP T630 devices boot in UEFI mode. There is a known problem of the AMD/Radeon Kernel Mode Settings framebuffer not getting along with the UEFI framebuffer, so on these devices I had to disable the latter in loader.conf. Without that X.org did not switch to graphics mode properly, even when the KMS modules appeared to load correctly on the console. So use hw.syscons.disable=1.
  • Once the above two are properly done, X.org works fine. There is no need for xf86-video-radeon, xf86-video-amdgpu or xf86-video-intel. It is better if these xf86-video drivers are NOT present on the system.
I built the Kernel Mode Settings modules from the github source on a system with a fast processor, and then just simply copied the compiled files from /boot/modules/ over to the T610 and T630 Thin Clients.

I bought a HP t610 WW thin Client from newegg.com recently.
HP t610 specs
I am typing on it now using FreeBSD 13.1 amd64 and icewm and chrome but have only 800x600.
It came with 1g ssd, and was supposed to come with 16g ssd. I have 4T usb device connected to USB3 and installed using zfs on that.
I used muktadiur.wordpress.com t610
Code:
# cat /usr/local/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/driver-inter.conf
Section "Device"
   Identifier "Card0"
   Driver "scfb"
EndSection

With the above, and .xinitrc containing exec icewm I then ran startx
Icewm started.
xrandr gives:
Code:
g@azathoth:~ $ xrandr
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 800 x 600, current 800 x 600, maximum 800 x 600
default connected 800x600+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   800x600 0.00*

Do I have to compile those modules to get higher resolution? I have used FreeBSD off and on for years but have not used compiled kernel modules.
Is there any more recent fix?
The way it is is usable but I would prefer 1024x768 just not sure all the effort worth it.

You are using the framebuffer driver. That is as rudimentary as it can get. Any other mode would be far more improved.
For X on the T-610, I use the modesetting driver. It works perfectly well, with high resolution graphics screen on my LCD.
As I figured out since, you do not need the github source. Everything one needs is already provided in the ports tree.
3 important details to note:
A., You need to build the KMS modules FROM SOURCE. Mind you, you do not need to do this on the T-610 itself. I build the KMS modules once for each FreeBSD release, on a fast intel core desktop. Then I just ZIP up the compiled files and copy over to my T-610 and other FreeBSD machines.
B., Do not forget to load /boot/modules/radeonkms.ko from your rc.conf via kld_list="...".
C., On the T-610, hw.syscons must be disabled, otherwise the radeonkms module does not work.

There is no need to compile a custom kernel. You can use the GENERIC that comes with your FreeBSD Release. Just add the KMS modules.

https://wiki.freebsd.org/Graphics worked !
If UEFI boot results in a conflict between a driver and the EFI frame buffer, you can add this line to /boot/loader.conf to disable the buffer:

hw.syscons.disable=1
Radeon KMS (kernel mode setting)
The radeonkms module is for older GPUs (pre-HD7000 or pre-Tahiti).

Install the graphics/drm-kmod package
# pkg install drm-kmod

The post-installation message presents essential information. With FreeBSD 13⋯, this command will safely configure your /etc/rc.conf:

# sysrc -f /etc/rc.conf kld_list+=radeonkms

Ensure that your UID is a member of the video group.

Restart your system. You should see radeonkms listed, and a flash of the console when the display driver is switched.

Start X.Org via your usual method (i.e. startx, GDM, etc.)
