Quite an amount of reading to do!

Yes, I needed to run su mc to get it to work.
Why? Do I have to add the user to any group for them to be able to use mc?
I would presume running as root isn't recommend...

typed, not copy pasted:
Code:
total 8
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 3463 Feb 1 10:08 ini
drwx------ 2 root wheel 512 Feb 1 08:56 mcedit
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 0 Feb 1 08:13 panels.ini

chown -R YOURUSER:YOURUSER ~/.config/mc should fix it.

In fact, to fix other possible similar occurrences, do it for your whole $HOME: chown -R YOURUSER:YOURUSER /home/YOURUSER.

Prodigit,
My ThinkPad's minus key stopped working but I was relieved to discover you can just pop the keycap off, remove the offending debris (in my case it was a fingernail - nice to think how bits of us are dropping off all the time)... The key is now good as new.
