Solved proftpd not accepting connections after ports update

Hello Forum,

After a port upgrade, proftpd stopped accepting connections. Wireshark shows a reply of "500 AUTH not understood" to ftp connections. auth.log and secure.log have no information.
FreeBSD 11.1-RELEASE-p5 and Proftp ver 1.3.6
I reduced the pf firewall to allow all.

Kinda stuck. Any advice greatly accepted.
 
I was running proftpd on localhost and redirecting through pf. I removed the following and set ftp to listen on external interface.

#rdr pass log(all, to pflog1) on lan0 inet proto tcp from any to lan0 port 8821 -> 127.0.0.1 port 8821

What I don't understand is that this has worked for years but not after the port update. C'est la vie
