pkg repos for 15.1 should exist?

As Im understanding now, there should be or will be https://pkg.freebsd.org/FreeBSD:15.1:amd64/latest someday? (note the 15.1) when that happens it will be automatically updated? or will I need to update them manually?

Code:
pkg repos 12:52

the .1 part of the FreeBSD minor is already present on the repos that support it as the _1 suffix. I'm guessing that you already knew that from reading the documentation and are just wondering if the there will be some symlink to those folders in the format you mention?

Well, my main problem was that packages listed for nvidia where not compiled for 15.1 version so I needed to compile from ports and I was wondering if that is the normal behaviour of freebsd that one is expected to compile things from ports instead of installing them with what is available in pkg?

If that is normal behaviour, I will just keep the mental note on that...

no, what you mention is a known issue currently (use the search function of the forums), and is more convulted than having or not a 15.1 repo for kmods.
The current work around is as you say, build from source, but that is not what is expected.
Again search the forums you will find more information.

There will be no ":15.1:" package repository. Every major branch (e.g. 14, 15, 16) has only one package repository with the branch name. Minor branch repos (e.g. 14.5, 15.1) don't get their own version name, see https://pkg.freebsd.org/ Tier-1, Tier-2 package sets.

This is the case only for (more or less) 3 months after a minor release is introduced.

https://www.freebsd.org/security/#model .
The FreeBSD support model

Each minor release is only supported for three months after the next minor release within the same major version, ...

Taking the 15 branch as example (15.0 , 15.1):

Release Date of 15.1-RELEASE was June 16, 2026
Expected EoL of 15.0-RELEASE was September 30, 2026

In this period of (in this case more than ) 3 months, packages are build for 15.0 until End-of-life. Then, packages are build for 15.1.

Normal 3rd party application packages will run fine on both 15.0 and 15.1, but not kernel modules, as the nVIDIA driver, as you stated correctly. Those kernel modules have to match the running kernel, that's why you had to build it from ports in this 3+ month period.

There are special kernel module repositories, matching a minor release (FreeBSD-ports-kmods), but the 15.1 repositories weren't updated ("kmods_latest_1": 2026-May-20 and "kmods_quarterly_1": 2026-May-21 ) until recently ("kmods_latest": 2026-Oct-06 , kmods_quarterly": 2026-Oct-07) [1] .

To make use of the "kmods_latest" repository, you need to modify your package repository "url:":
Rich (BB code):
FreeBSD-ports-kmods: {
- url: "pkg+https://pkg.FreeBSD.org/FreeBSD:15:amd64/kmods_latest_1",
+ url: "pkg+https://pkg.FreeBSD.org/FreeBSD:15:amd64/kmods_latest",
or
+ url: "pkg+https://pkg.FreeBSD.org/${ABI}/kmods_latest",

And, the "latest" "FreeBSD-ports" 15 branch mirrors were last synchronized on 2026-Oct-05 10:14 [1]. This means packages are built for 15.1 now. From now on, suppose the nVIDIA driver is updated, you don't need to build from ports anymore, it can be installed from package, until 15.1 is EoL (March 31, 2027).
