Before I attempt a reinstall my current systems, given that they are presently inaccessible & go automatically to the Mate desktop (with password failure), how can I get to the command line to attempt to fix the passwd pam_ chauthtok() error.
Boot to single user mode. Then disable slim_enable (assuming you used SLiM) in rc.conf. Now the system won't boot straight to X. In single user mode you can also "fix" your passwords (if they need fixing).
Get to know "single user mode", it's often the only way to fix certain issues.
