I was searching in slightly opposite direction. Why more(1) was changed to less(1)?
Yes, formally, we still have more(1) and probably it's POSIX compliant, but now it's GNU under the hood.
Somehow I thought that there is a desire to depend less on GNU, but maybe am totally wrong here.
On the other hand this change eliminated a piece of code to be maintained. Which is a good thing.
