Operating System Market Share on World, and FreeBSD?

On Reddit have shared StatCounter's data for 2022, they have concluded, although as usual, there is leeway in the figures thrown out by the service. This is how the table looks in December 2022:

. Windows: 75,34%
. OS X: 14,66%
. Unknown : 4,78%
. Linux: 2,93%
. ChromeOS: 2,28%
. FreeBSD: 0,01%

Last place I worked there were several thousand Windows servers and more than a thousand Linux and AIX servers, none of which ran web browsers.

I have a web browser installed on all my FreeBSD systems, but rarely use it.

So the Redit stats really only cover public desktops.

Why?

Use the most appropriate tool for every task, depending on the task and the preference of the user. I think that *BSD are excellent operating systems for embedded and server usage, and FreeBSD for servers that run a LAMP stack (ha ha, there is a pun in there) and are used as storage servers. Why do I need to go through a "purity test" of also using FreeBSD on a laptop?

Spyware, Lighter OS which allows you to use it on older hardware, faster security fixes the list goes on and on not to mention it's marketed as being able to be used as a desktop on the home page.

Possibly a sad idea is that reddit users are vastly more likely to be running Linux than i.e users on Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Which means that even the hard earned ~3% is probably negligible in the real world. Likely sub 0.1%, same as FreeBSD.

Don't forget Chromebooks. What do Chromebooks report for the user-agent string? Might not be Linux.

I imagine when a Chromebook is running a proper Linux distro (either chroot or multiboot), then it will report correctly. Though I believe most chromebook users keep with the Android-style locked down environment.

Both are Linux kernels but count only in the same way that a Playstation 4 counts as "FreeBSD". As in, not really.

Looking forward to 2024, Will there be a FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, or GhostBSD Operating System for Qualcomm Nuvia CPU? Or Only a Windows 11 or 12 Operating System available for that Nuvia Chip?? What do you prognosticate?

Pretty sure OP means it was posted to reddit not reddit users themselves the information is public knowledge here - https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/desktop/worldwide

From that site's FAQ:

"What methodology is used to calculate Statcounter Global Stats?

Statcounter is a web analytics service. Our tracking code is installed on more than 1.5 million sites globally. These sites cover various activities and geographic locations. Every month, we record billions of page views to these sites. For each page view, we analyse ..."

So it's only from data from websites who choose to use their own product!

And who cares anyway? If FreeBSD users cared about being in some contest, let alone 'winning', they surely wouldn't be using Freebsd.

It's not accurate means for sure but still non the less interesting. The more people that use the OS the more likely hood of getting better support for things like software maybe without needing say a Linux binary. So I would say it is important.

It's far less interesting once you've dug a little to find that it's not information, but pure self-serving marketing.

Perhaps. More users per se does not equate to better quality software authors or maintainers, or even greater numbers of such.

It may just attract more new users who require a higher level of support. Beware of growth for growth's sake.

So I would say it is important.

Accurate information is very important in supporting any theory. This survey isn't that, accepting that you do care.

For comparison, on stack overflow the following tags have the corresponding counts
  • [linux] 223132
  • [freebsd] 1994
That's broadly in line with the StatCounter figures

Windows has less questions than Linux which I find a little more surprising.

fwiw, questions about operating systems are off topic on SO unless they are programming related.

On the more appropriate Unix & Linux Stackexchange:
Linux 36,930
FreeBSD 1670

Qualcom isn't even friendly to Linux, to the point where they cut Google off updates for drivers for Android after too short a time. And Windows people want their games. I doubt that this thing has a bright future. You maybe see RISC-V Chromebooks before Nuvia takes off.
