NVIDIA vs AMD video card on new desktop build?

You only need cuda for a specific kind of applications. In general it's not needed.
I'm aware of that. Using the GPU for number crunching is a feature I need to have working...

@cracauer I would prefer that it work natively and not be bogged down in emulation layers that could kill performance.

Linuxulator (the code that runs on the CPU) has no impact on the shader (the stuff that the GPU executes) performance. That said, I've been running hashcat on Nvidia (in OpenCL mode) without it, so there are some options out there.

Gotcha...original intent of my post though was to describe my effort to get the AMD card working as well as the nvidia card so I could take advantage of the AMD GPU processing (which is suppose to be possible in an open source way), but the performance of the AMD drivers cannot compete with the nvidia closed source ones (at least under linux). My openGL benchmarking showed such dismal AMD performance though, that I'm not convinced it is worth the effort to evne attempt any GPU computational throughput comparisons.

DVI is a hybrid digital+analog connector and can carry both a digital and an analog signal at the same time, or only a digital signal, or only an analog signal (this last case is unlikely nowadays). It's possible that your GPU in its default configuration on FreeBSD only outputs a digital signal, which is why your DVI to VGA adapter doesn't work. In this case, either find a configuration setting that will make the GPU output an analog signal, or use a DVI to HDMI adapter which should work without issues.
I found that i must get an Active adapter i have found one.

I'm having trouble deciding between the RTX 3070 TI and the RX 6800 XT. Both cards will pair well with my used system I plan to purchase but I don't know how each card will work on FreeBSD. Could anyone offer their experiences? My biggest concern is with screen tearing. I use Wayfire or LXQT with picom on some systems to try and prevent tearing however I do have an Nvidia card that has been rather difficult to prevent tearing. I just don't want to run into that issue if I go with an Nvidia GPU.

Use sienna_cichlid driver for the RX 6800 XT.

My thread should help here: Thread sienna_cichlid-driver.86670. Yeah, my GPU is RX 6900 XT, but the same instructions apply to your RX 6800 XT, as well.

I have RX 6600 which works fine on FreeBSD 14. But I did not find how to enable OpenCL. Is it supported at all with this card?

Does it mean OpenCL is not supported?
