If you want a stable setup, you always can use scfb driver btw.
Does a great job for me on 11-RELEASE and can even play full screen video.
Well no acceleration with this driver, but it works quite well for all daily tasks. https://wiki.freebsd.org/Graphics/SCFB
I have the same problem. I have i5 6300U (skylake) with HD 520.
Using drm-kmod resolved my issue

What are the cons of this solution? Is there a way to use xf86-video-intel on my hardware?
The are no cons, you are using the right driver.
This thread is old and was started long before official support for Skylake graphics landed in the drm driver with FreeBSD 11.2-RELEASE in june 2018.
Thank you for an answer, I think it will be helpful for future googling users.
I have one last question which kmod should I use? drm-kmod (metaport) or drm-fbsd12.0-kmod?
I currently use drm-kmod and I rarely see my X freeze for ~2 seconds so I am thinking about using fbsd12.0.
FreeBSD 12.0 here
