No HDMI sound Intel Broxton

After upgrading an Intel Broxton from 13.3 to 14.1 (set-top box playing videos), its pcm2 audio has stopped.
# dmesg | grep -i pcm
pcm0: <Realtek ALC269 (Front Analog)> at nid 21 and 24 on hdaa0
pcm1: <Realtek ALC269 (Internal Analog Mic)> at nid 18 on hdaa0
pcm2: <Intel Broxton (HDMI/DP 8ch)> at nid 3 on hdaa1
#
# cat /dev/sndstat
Installed devices:

pcm1: <Realtek ALC269 (Internal Analog Mic)> (rec)
pcm2: <Intel Broxton (HDMI/DP 8ch)> (play) default

No problems with my workstation using its audio from a nvidia graphics card.
It is also a concern that I've seen a report that Linux dropped it's audio support for Broxton and several other 'legacy' Intel chips in deference to a new AVS driver.
Such news cause me concern that perhaps they mean Xorg has been dropping its audio support for these chips.. And if so, then the new driver would need to be on FreeBSD for people using these older Intel chips.
