Motherboard memory compatibility confusion

Greetings all,

I am planning to build another computer since a friend gave me some DDR4 memory, that came from his Supermicro X10ADi motherboard. Regarding the System Memory, the specification lists Memory Capacity as: 1TB 3DS ECC/non-ECC RDIMM, DDR4-2400MHzUp to 2TB 3DS ECC LRDIMM, DDR4-2400MHz, in 16 DIMM slots.

The memory - Crucial CT4G4Df88213.8FA1 specification: 4GB DDR4 Non ECC PC4-17000 2133Mhz Single Rank, x8 UDIMM Memory.

As best as I can interpret the motherboard specification, it can take non-ECC memory as long as it is Registered (RDIMM) or Load-Rediced (LRDIMM). However, as to my (albeit limited knowledge), non-ECC memory is not made in any of the flavors.

As I have absolutely no reason to believe that my friend would lie to me, can someone explain the compatibility issue, so that I can understand the specifications?

Kindest regards,

M

Hi cracauer@,

thank you for the reply.

Yes, this appears to be consistent with my friend's claim that the non-ECC memory worked. What I was confused about that it listed only RDIMM and LRDIMM. In other words as long as the specification lists ECC/non-ECC, one can use both, correct?

Kindest regards,

M

Not sure it applies to all hardwares, but if I recall correctly, every hardwares I've ever used supporting ECC and/or buffered (registered) memory modules (starting from SIMM) didn't support mixups of ECC/non-ECC and/or buffered/unbuffered modules at the same time. But this is an old story before I've switched to notebooks years ago (backed to miniPC now, though).
