LXDE Missing X server or $DISPLAY

I have been running FreeBSD with LXDE for many years, but I suddenly get an error msg when trying to start chrome from the command line

Missing X server or $DISPLAY.

I using the command line to find out what is going wrong.

This is on a ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 1.

I'm not aware of changing anything recently.

Any ideas what might have caused this?

I would try setting $DISPLAY by hand to see what happens: DISPLAY=:0 <command>.
By the way, with "chrome" you mean www/chromium or www/linux-chrome?

Not sure what you mean by <command>

I'm running chromium and have been doing so for many years.

Not sure what you mean by <command>

If you are using tcsh, use env DISPLAY=:0 chrome.
DISPLAY=:0 chrome applies to shells such as sh and bash.

It's not relevant, After freebsd-update and pkg upgrade, things work again like they had been doing for the last ten years.
