I do not know if it's known but it happened recently. I was installing one of my old notebooks yesterday from 14.0 memstick image and I couldn't get it working as you mentioned above.
Few weeks ago I installed multiple MATE instances on my VMWare VMs with no issues at all.
I guess something happened in the last "quarterly" packages updates.
Let's see what others will tell us.
