KDE4 and Printing support

Hi,

First of all I tried OpenSUSE 11.2 to check if kde4 could do everything I want to do, It does.

Could someone confirm If OpenSuse (linux distro here) is using kde3.5 printing application?. Because Printing control panel looks like kde 3.5, I mean behaves live old kde 3.5

Using KDE4 with freebsd 8, as far as I could tried to install a printer from Adding Printer, I was not able to select REMOTE,Local, Cups, etc. I willing to do it again, but I think I did a couple mistakes.

Already know this is not as easy using freebsd 8.0, I am a little confused with ports, which port does what, Which port do I need for printing.

Do I need to use kde3.5 applications?

Already googled several pages, no luck up to now, I just want to now if possible to print from OpenOffice and KDE4. I would be using a remote CUPS server.

Why I didn´t use OpenSuse and make live easier? I don´t like linux. But I miss vmware! :(

thanks

Yes, it's possible to print from KDE4 applications, and from non-KDE4 applications like OpenOffice.org, so long as they support CUPS printing.

You have to make sure that CUPS is installed and running correctly. The easiest way is to go to the following website: http://localhost:631 You can try adding a printer from the Administration tab. If that works, it will show up in the KDE printing applet. If that doesn't work, then the problem is with CUPS, and not KDE.

Hello again,

Cups is not a problem, I am able to print from Windows environment.

As I mentioned Cups is running remotely.

Do I have to run cups server again in workstations? I don´t thing so.

Kde 3.5 applications are no longer inside freebsd 8.0 dvd.

What already did:

Installed cups server in remote computer.
Installed PPD files for printers.
Configure CUPS to be able to adminitrate remotely.
Installed windows 7 in workstation A (windows partition)
Able to print from workstation A
Create alternate freebsd partition in workstation A
Installed X, KDE4,qt4,solved several dependencies.
installed system-config-printer-kde-4.3.4
kdeutils-printer-applet-4.3.4

Up to now unable to print from KDE

KDE uses a local CUPS server to manage printers. The local CUPS server can communicate with remote CUPS servers and expose printers from them. You can to make sure that the remote CUPS server has browsing enabled for the network that you are on. Then, when you go into the Add Printer part of the local CUPS, it should automatically find your remote CUPS printers.
