In general the problem is that there is only a vague definition from where to where drm driver version reaches since there seems to be no (easy) accessible official documentation.
It ends up that the users have to test what works and what doesn't (like the thread above) and then later the other users search for it and find these tests and learn about it.
The i915kms driver says (for Intel APUs starting with HD3000 / Sandy Bridge) so everything below that is legacy.
