How to make a SN655 U.3 NVMe via PCIe x4 work on FreeBSD?

Hi.

So I have purchased a SN655 NVMe with a fancy U.3 connector. Since no mainboard comes with a possibility to connect to such a device, an external controller card seems to be needed. Those a ridiculously expensive and so I decided against one. Especially because I only have one drive to connect to my computer... somehow....

So I have researched a bit and it seems that U.3 also comes with a pure PCIe interface. So why not simply use one of my unused PCIe lanes for it? I just need some weird cable......... like this one: https://www.delock.com/produkt/81507/merkmale.html?f=s

Unfortunately, except a hot drive with a green LED, I got nothing working at all. I tried it in two computers. One AMD and one Intel. I used the free x16 PCIe lane usually used for a graphics card and inserted the x4 riser card. But I were not able to find any device, not even with pciconf -lv

What can I do? :(

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Any $15 PCIe to U.2 card will do the job. You only need U.2 for your U.3 drive.

Alternatively there are M.2 to U.2 cables.

As said, I have bought that cable mentioned above, which is PCIe to U.2 but still, pciconf -lv doesn't show the device. Is the cable the wrong one?
