Solved How old is too old?

In that case, you have nothing to worry about. If that iMac ever craps out; just take out the CPU and repurpose it in another motherboard. Scrap the rest. Easy peasy.
 
I plan to daily drive it until the problem worsens delay further productivity as I continue to stay on the 14-RELEASE branch progressing my way to future releases and see how it's like. I build a gaming PC in 2018 (Ryzen 5 2600/GTX 1070) left untouched from that period so would be a fallback when the time comes. As far as I know even with GPUs that are from 2009 era as long they are supported from intel/AMD open drivers (post nvidia 340 driver) there won't be much of an issue like I have.
I have an iMac 12,2 (mid-2011, 27") that I got for cheap earlier this year. I replaced the nvidia gpu it came with with an AMD WX 4130, and put in an SSD instead of the old HDD. The machine works great with Debian 13 and is my main workstation computer now. Even found an old Belkin Thunderbolt 3 docking station that works with the Apple bi-directional Thunderbolt I/II (miniDP) <-> USB-C adapter, so I have USB 3.0 ports available. Works great! These older iMacs are pretty easy to service and take a lot of parts that can be bough cheaply on eBay. And great displays!
 
Software should be removed when there is something wrong with it, not just because it is inactive upstream. There is such a thing as finished software that just runs indefinitely.
I spent an awful lot of time trying to get FreeBSD working on a GoFlex Home unit. I managed to get it booting from a USB stick but never worked out how to get it to boot from a hard disk. I had to abandon my profect since support for Arm v5 was pulled. There was nothing wrong with what was available so I don't understand why support was removed.

Periodic stall and recovery tells me something is too hot.

How long since system and PSU opened up for cleaning and inspection? Look for popped capacitors everywhere.

Check CPU temps, perhaps the conductive paste needs a refresh.

I wish it was a temperature problem, but after I messed up the libglx in the xorg module extension directory i reinstalled xorg server and havent gotten the black screen since

You can also boot MemTest86 plus and let it run overnight.

This will shake out a lot of bugs but is designed for Intel processors
 
Cool, I didn't know that memory tests can be inadvertently related with the Nvidia GPU. I will look into the xorg module extension to see what happened then into the memtest.
 
The question is not, how old something is.
The right point is, as long as it works and you or somebody else can do something useful with it, it's not obsolete.
Which involes the quest for what useful things can be done with it.
If one of both points is not given then it's junk, no matter how old or young it is.

There are many other examples, but one was my NAS: Its over twenty years old AMD Phenom II X4 980 finally became too slow ("old") for my desktop usage. But it does more than just a sufficient job for several years being my trustworthy NAS.
I also have three thirteen old HP EliteDesk G1 Towers in the attic. Such hardware to have is very good for some hardcore testing purposes, like doing dirty things with brute force without the need my real machines even remotely get in touch with. I can recklessly bang as hard as I want in any way on them, because it doesn't matter when one of those things is gone. A hardware separated sandbox. Nice to have.
Or perhaps, like in Aknot's recent example, one day some kid may ask to get into computers. You can give such hardware without bothering what's done with it. It has no real monetary value anymore, but it works. At least for learning the important basics, like the lesson of what's it like when it's suddenly broken, before you give access to an expensive machine.
 
Well, there is one thing where chronological age actually matters: the failure of cheap electrolytic capacitors, especially since "made in china"... 😫 They are cheap for a reason.

Other components can fail too, including SMD caps, but the primary finger of suspicion points at cheap electrolytics. This applies in the power supply, motherboard, daughter cards, and pretty much all kinds of electronic equipment, network switches, audio gear, etc. This is not a new problem, who remembers the motherboard "capacitor plague" of 2002...

And as with most electronic components, the industry is plagued with fakes, also mainly since "made in china". 🫤
Yeah, those "Nichicon" capacitors in your aliexpress "Lehmann clone" headphone amp, might not be the real thing... 😄

I recapped many boards from that time.
ABit was sued into bankruptcy as a result of cheap Chinese caps.

I still have a plentiful stock of Rubycon premium caps that won’t ever get used now.

My ABit board is still running in my primary workstation today. Power supplies are best discarded instead of recapping.

Bestec HP supplies were the worst of the lot. I stick with Seasonic now.
 
I had an old soviet hifi amp back around 1981, they used to sell them here back then. Inside it was built of what looked like military grade components, dark green resistors, silver can e-caps just like the ones in the video, strange looking power transistors and diodes, and some really high grade wire-work hooking it all together, I remember being amazed at how good the wiring was. Quite different from western or asian electronics, really quite interesting. It was built like a tank too, it had a pair of huge transformers inside that looked really good quality. The case was made of brown lacquered wood, with a heavy steel chassis, I can't actually remember the brand name. Sadly I no longer have it. Seeing the photo of the soviet electrolytics in the video reminded me.

This video is a bit like it, although the one I had was not the same as they one they have disassembled. I do remember those big silver electrolytic caps though. Actually the one he's got looks rather messy inside, my memory is of something much better put together, mine didn't have that rats nest of wires, the wiring was really good. I wish I had at least kept the electrolytics, I bet they would still work now.

Power supplies are best discarded instead of recapping.
The annoying thing is that modern PSUs have really weak 5v rails. Not just weak but outright dangerous if group regulated with the 12v.

I have recapped one PSU but yes, I would never really trust it. The whole process just felt kinda dangerous to be honest. Especially since the large capacitors in it could still discharge a hazardous amount of energy and it was basically an undocumented mess in there.

It almost inspires me to try again in future. Though unlike this more specialist hardware, for ATX PSUs, luckily, if we pay a little more, we can still buy them new and they are independently regulated and 30A on the 5v rail. Worst case scenario, you need to saw off the +4 in the 20+4 power connector if its not a separate clip. It might be better to just buy 20 spares today to see us through a lifetime.
 
I used to follow a guy who bought, tore apart, and tested all sorts of power supplies.
I've used Corsair and Seasonic for a very long time now in customer builds.
Sparkle was actually quite reliable as well, but that was a VERY long time ago.

The 230w HP Bestech were the root cause of many blown system boards that came to my bench.
Pure junk.

As I understand it, somebody sold Japanese cap secrets to China, but they didn't get the entire recipe.
The Chinese knockoffs were behind the huge number of board recaps in those days.
Video cards also. Japanese Rubycon caps are the cure. A quality desoldering station is a must.

I had Antec PSU failures, so avoided them.
I have three P180, and simply love those chassis.
They don't make 'em like that anymore.
 
I guess I must have been lucky with the Antec psu's, but it sounds like you've done a lot more system building than me, I'm really a programmer, hardware is just a hobby. Never heard of Sparkle, maybe they weren't marketed over here. I used to get all my components from ebuyer, sadly I think they've gone under. Yes the P180 is one of my all-time favourite cases. I remember the first one I built, and I got all the fans undervolted and the noise-dampening panels on both sides, got everything installed, switched it on, and... silence is golden. :) I could actually hear the noise of the hard drives if I listened carefully at nighttime, but it was very quiet. I had to vacuum the dust off the air filter grilles inside the front panel a few times though, and that angled one at the back on the top. I loved the silicone dampened suspension for mounting hard drives. Every edge was rolled. It was a real quality job. It's a real shame they've stopped making that one.

Right, I'd guess the more old an hardware is it's going to become a server for relatively simple tasks since it won't handle well using a modern browser.

What were your usage like on the PC? The CPU seems to be quad core from 2011 so it should be enough for daily browsing.

In general, with old machines today, it tends to be *only* the browser they struggle with. Everything else can be quite snappy or you can easily find less bloated alternatives.
 
Does it also correlates with the temperature of the components on the motherboard?
Yes, in general, the warmer your electrolytic caps get, the faster the elctrolyte dries out. So any that are sited right next to heatsinks are likely to go first, for example. Of course better quality capacitors will last longer, you get what you pay for.
