help with upgrade 15.0 to 15.1

Trying to upgrade and I get this:

Code:

This is new to me, is FreeBSD asking me to upgrade zonenotify first?
Or should I re-install from scratch?

I just ignored one or two packages that were like that, then did pkg upgrade -r 15.1-RELEASE, and then of course pkg upgrade -f, and it upgraded just fine.

Have you followed the guide instructions for upgrading from 15.0 to 15.1 found in the FreeBSD handbook found here --->? https://docs.freebsd.org/en/books/handbook/cutting-edge/

I just completed this upgrade process from my 15.0-RELEASE-p0 installation.
The first step was to follow the guide to update from 15.0-RELEASE to 15.0-RELEASE-p14.
Then the next step was to upgrade from 15.0-RELEASE-p14 to 15.1-RELEASE, and then to bring it to the latest patch level: 15.1-RELEASE-p5.
Then upgrade packages using pkg (and any ports you are using - see portmaster -af in the guide) including gpu-firmware and the drm driver for video.

erichans helped me immensely when I got confused with upgrade troubles including DRM video drivers and gpu firmware - he is very knowledgeable!

As the Quarterly REPO was update to 15.1 packages last Saturday , pkg reports that you are trying to install 15.1 packages on top of your 15.0 installation.

You should upgrade the base to 15.1-p5 Release BEFORE attempting to upgrade the packages.

I tried to ignore the mismatch and now it no longer boots and freezes after "Loading splash ok"
Install was originally done with Packages (Tech Preview).
And I was following the handbook section 27.3.3.

I have one more machine here, my server.
I've always used "pkg update" followed by "pkg upgrade" since I installed 15.0.

Can I use
Code:
# freebsd-update fetch
# freebsd-update install

to upgrade to 15.0 p14 without screwing up my last good machine?

This Page includes instructions for upgrading both with distribution-sets and pkgbase.

I suspect that the boot fails for you because you have added kmods for 15.1 to your 15.0 kernel.
Possibly one way to fix it would be to boot from the installation media ( CD , memorystick ) , select to use a shell instead of installing.
and then mount the ZROOT and remove the wireless/graphics/??? kmods form /boot/loader.conf and /etc/rc.conf

Are you running a ZFS on root based system?

This indicates you're running a packaged base-install, see also pkgbase(7). For upgrading your base from 15.0 to 15.1-RELEASE you need to follow FreeBSD 15.1-RELEASE Upgrading Instructions - Upgrading with Base System Packages.

Using is package based install or using a install based on (traditional) distribution sets are mutually exclusive: you can have only have one of the two. Each have their own specific upgrading instructions.

Can I use
Code:
# freebsd-update fetch
# freebsd-update install
to upgrade to 15.0 p14 without screwing up my last good machine?
No, freebsd-update(8) is currently only applicable for an install based on distribution sets:
Rich (BB code):
# pkg repos FreeBSD-base
FreeBSD-base: {
    url : "pkg+https://pkg.FreeBSD.org/FreeBSD:15:amd64/base_release_1",
    enabled : yes,
    priority : 0,
    mirror_type : "SRV",
    signature_type : "FINGERPRINTS",
    fingerprints : "/usr/share/keys/pkgbase-15"
  }
# freebsd-update fetch
freebsd-update is incompatible with the use of packaged base. Please see
https://wiki.freebsd.org/PkgBase for more information.

For applying the latest patches to a packaged base install, use pkg-upgrade(8):
pkg upgrade -r FreeBSD-base
