Solved "gpart: Device busy" when trying to format external USB thumbdrive

pkg list fusefs-exfat
should show what things the package installed to your system, pick one of them that will probably contain something like mkfs or mkexfat etc.
/usr/local/sbin/mount.exfat
/usr/local/sbin/mount.exfat-fuse
/usr/local/share/licenses/fusefs-exfat-1.4.0_1/GPLv2+
/usr/local/share/licenses/fusefs-exfat-1.4.0_1/LICENSE
/usr/local/share/licenses/fusefs-exfat-1.4.0_1/catalog.mk
/usr/local/share/man/man8/mount.exfat-fuse.8.gz

Your gpt partition table might be corrupted.

gpart show da0

Can show whether it is corrupted or not.
The command shows:
gpart: No such geom: da0.

but, I can now use the drive just fine. Go figure.

:-)
