gnome-volume-control does nothing.

i have a fresh installation of 8-current i386 with gnome2-lite installed and snd_hda driver.
sound works fine, i can adjust the volume via mixer, but gnome-volume-control does nothing. theres no errors that im aware of... none that i can find. gnome-volume-control just does nothing. is anyone else having this problem?

when i had the full gnome2 installed on a previous 7.2 installation it worked fine. is something just broken in 8-current? or does the full gnome2 install something that is needed to make it work? thanks.

ok when i run gnome-volume-control in the shell i get this error:
Code:
** (gnome-volume-control:46480: DEBUG: Disabling debugging

** (gnome-volume-control:46480): WARNING **: Bad setup, install the freedesktop sound theme

(gnome-volume-control:46480): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_tree_model_get_iter_first: assertion `GTK_IS_TREE_MODEL (tree_model)' failed
E: shm.c: shm_unlink(/tmp/pulse-shm-1203772190) failed: Permission denied

Are your ports updated?
What is the output of pkg_version -l "<"?

Why not starting following this advice?

all my ports are up to date.

i did install freedesktop-sound-theme and it did nothing except enable some little system sounds... it did nothing to make the volume-control work.
