Gnome/Cups: Default paper size

I have a networked HP printer which is configured in CUPS. It's paper size is set to ISO A4 (210x297mm). But when I want to print from GTK applications like gedit or firefox35, the paper size for this printer always defaults to US Letter.

I am using:
Code:
cups-base-1.4.2_3
gtk-2.18.5

Isn't GTK supposed to communicate the paper size for the printer with CUPS?

And how would I go about persistantly changing the default paper size to ISO A4?

CUPS is configured to use ISO A4. When I go to the CUPS administration web-interface, under Set Default Options->General->Media Size, it reads 'A4'. It's also in the PPD file.
