Gnome 2.32 - oddities with file handling

So far noticed in GEDIT as well as the right-click "compress" option in Gnome 2.32 with the 8.2 prerelease. I sense a commonality and wanted to report it and see if anyone else is experiencing it as well.

Tried to open files such as .xsession-errors and gedit just hangs. OK, perhaps it couldn't handle dot files. Anyone else seeing this?

Second charm was trying to use the "compress" right click context item to compress the home directory (non-root in both cases) and while the home directory successfully compressed, all files with a leading % never made it into the archive, such as %gconf.xml in each and every folder. Not one of them made it.

Standard user, not root. Successfully archived with tar in su, but file-roller failed as well. Are there new restrictions on "hidden" file types that need to be worked around to compensate for this new "feature?" OR does gvfs need more salt?
