GNOME 2.28 and sound applet

When I try to increase the sound volume rolling the mouse wheel over the sound applet it just goes 1-2% up and jumps immediately down to it's previous level. Decreasing works fine (rolling the wheel in opposite direction). It happened on both of my desktops after the upgrade to 2.28 so I don't think it's an isolated case.
Anybody else seeing this ?
 
well, I got back sound (and the applet). But mouse behavior is the same like tbyte declared. I have usb mouse, sometimes it's acting a bit weird.
I tried mplayer a few times and never have it configured. What is the most comprehensive tutorial for mplayer on FreeBSD?
