this is an issue with FreeBSD being around for such a long time. Doing searches for stuff is rough due to all the old information out there.
One day I will learn to just stick with the Handbook....i can hope anyways heh

To be honest - I can add send|recv options to beadm(8) to be interpretted as import|export. It makes sense in a ZFS environment.

This is a translation from German to English of a blog post, which covers most aspects of the given topic „Full Backup solution including Restore“.

In the section „The actual cloning process“ Pro’s and Con’s of various software utilities are discussed. For various reasons, a bootable clone of the system partition is the most advantageous option:

1. A defect system drive can be replaced by the clone and the system is returned to up and running in almost no time.
2. If you need to restore or verify only parts of the system, you have full file system access to the clone.
3. The clone can be synced to the actual state of the system, which takes only a fraction of the time of a complete backup (usually some minutes).
4. The system can be synced to the actual state of the clone (only switch <source> and <target> on the command line)

In order to achieve this, I suggest to use either of net/rsync or sysutils/clone.

ahhh ok. I get it now.
no biggie to keep a backup of the home directory and copy it over after I am done. Just tar it up every so often.

Getting the system back up as it was with all the firewall, routing, jails, bhyve info was the main goal.
Just for clarification, the beadm snapshot will preserve all of those things?

Keep in mind what boot environments (BE) are for. To save system state. Not user data.

So jails and bhyve vm's are in essence user data and typically where this stuff is stored is up to the user and isn't 100% standardized, so BE's do not automatically back that data up.

Just as you need to have a separate method of backing up the home directories, you need to do the same with jails and bhyve data.

I guess what I meant was...will it save the information from the setup of bhyve and jails?
If I do a restore and then create a new jail or a vm, will those 2 things will already be setup and working??

All I want is to NOT have to setup everything on the box all over again. I don't want to redo my installs/setup like setfib routing or bastille setup or bhyve install.
I can save the jails and the bhyve data/containers no problem. But will I have to install those programs again after a restore?

I think I may have asked the wrong question when I posted this originally. I don't care about the data I have...that can be backed up easily.
