You can apply the FreeBSD port patches, and then ./configure --prefix /opt/boinc && make && make install in the workdir.

That way you'll have a working boinc with your options frozen in time that won't be touched by pkg. Of course you will have to manually update when security fixes are released.

Yes, while you do end up with multiple copies of i.e zlib, they are encapsulated within a single folder that can be upgraded by simply deleting and replacing.

In UNIX terms, agreed, this is bloated (uses more filesystem) but logically it is cleaner, lighter and more resilient to versioning differences.

Yes!

If someone tells me that something is necessary, but cannot explain what that something is and justify why it is necessary, I reject it. I do not buy it, be it something edible from the supermarket or a new rc system for FreeBSD. Definitively.

T-Aoki gave a comprehensible justification of why improvements are necessary, and sure improvements are necessary, everything can be improved.

But those arguing like new rc system is necessary never give comprehensive justification of their point. The discussions about rc are...
 
True, chromium is a monster. Honestly, if I strip out XFCE entirely and just launch chromium directly from a lightweight window manager like Openbox or a bare X server, I could probably get the whole drive footprint under 1.5GB or less..
