Yes, while you do end up with multiple copies of i.e zlib, they are encapsulated within a single folder that can be upgraded by simply deleting and replacing.Putting more libraries, dependencies, would bloat my system.
It's not a rule. It's a precaution. You have to be careful which packages and ports get installed and from which build. People do it. I have. But it's not something to be taken lightly.Either packages or ports, not mixture, is the rule.
