My name is Andy and I am a long-time Arch Linux user. Recently, I decided to make a switch towards more 'hardcore' Unix-like operating systems, meaning BSDs. Unfortunately, I'm having some trouble even booting FreeBSD disc images
. I will try to describe my problem in as much detail as possible:
1. I am able to dump an .iso or .img disc image onto a USB stick through the Unix dd command, however upon later inspection, the USB contains (or doesn't, heh) a partition table that cannot be recognized by any of the disc management tools I have installed (gParted, fdisk, cfdisk, etc.). The most that could be identified is a 4-partition layout with the last partition being a FreeBSD partition of ~25MB in size.
2. A USB stick with a loaded memstick or mini-memstick .img image when used to boot FreeBSD produces only a black screen with a blinking underscore (regardless whether it's i386 or x86_64). Sometimes this proceeds to proper boot from the HDD, but most often it stays that way. A DVD with a loaded disc1.iso produces the same result.
3. FreeBSD 10.1-RELEASE could be booted from a USB on an ASUS laptop in CMS mode, but as one can see from the title, this is not the system in question. At this point I observed that despite the fact that I dumped numerous FreeBSD images onto the same USB stick through the dd command, oddly only the first one remained.
EDIT:
4. I managed to boot DragonflyBSD on this HP Compaq Elite 8000 without any problems. Using a second USB stick I tried FreeBSD-11.0-CURRENT, but to no avail. Again, the FreeBSD-11.0-CURRENT image booted on the Asus laptop (both in CMS and UEFI mode).
I would really like to start using FreeBSD already and would be more than happy to hear/read your suggestions on what can be done still.

After trying several USB stick .img images and CD/DVD .iso images I finally managed to boot FreeBSD. I burned a disc1 .iso image of FreeBSD-10.1-STABLE and booted from DVD-ROM. Worked like a charm! Mind, this was not so obvious as the first burned DVD containing FreeBSD-10.1-RELEASE would give the same blinking underscore as all USB stick images...
