FreeBSD on Dell Inspiron 1545

Hi,

Apologies if I'm doing something stupid here but I was wondering if anyone had encountered an error 5, unretryable, when booting off a physical FreeBSD DVD? I've got a *very* old Dell Inspiron 1545 (I bought it as an official Dell refurb in 2010!) and get the above error when choosing the install after booting from DVD. I'm assuming the DVD is ok because if it was corrupt, generally it wouldn't read at all and I can see the contents on other devices.

This is my first time using Unix in decades and is just a bit of a mess about, but any help would be appreciated :)

Can you share the exact error message? I think in this case, a image of it would be sufficient.

Oh, I had this one from 15 years ago till the screen went all red and dim some years ago - the fluorescent backlight's dying symptom.
We've had one Dell laptop too (inspiron n5010), which we lost due to the existing chronic problem of GPU.

It could be the DVD media or the DVD player. Try to boot the DVD on another machine. The fact to see the list of files doesn't mean the media is in good shape. You can also try to boot the Dell with another DVD.

I bet on the DVD player, that said.
