Firefox and ublock origin takes 10 seconds to load Youtube

Youtube now takes about 10 seconds to load the main page
If you have the ublock origin plugin installed for Firefox to blocks ads

if you disable ublock origin the page loads a lot faster

i always use mpv to play youtube videos by copying the url from the page
but i just noticed over the last couple of days a real slowdown loading Youtube with ublock origin on Firefox

all the filters are up to date in ublock,
so im guessing that youtube is now just messing with users who use ad blocking

just a heads up in case anyone else is having the same issue

i have noticed pages loading slowly before
just not a white screen for 10 seconds trying to load the main page

its a shame there isnt a port or package for invidious
i installed invidious on Fedora with podman a while ago and it worked really well

there is an experimental version of podman for Freebsd
but it looks like a pain to set up

In the past I've seen message on youtube stuff "using an ad blocker is against our terms of service" and "experiencing interruptions? Find out why" with "you're running an ad blocker, turn it off"

Yeah, but there were slowdowns with ad blockers before that resolved themselves. As far as we can tell Google either tells you to not block or not, but doesn't sneak in degradation of service.

I haven't noticed this on my devices. The only difference is that I run Noscript too, blocking lots of things prior to uBlock.
I try as I can to use Invideous, but Google does it hard to break the streams.
But I can confirm that natively YT takes much longer to load, and consumes far more RAM.

On the original topic: I could swear reading an article a few months back mentioning Youtube did intentionally slow down for users running ad blockers?
your right but i thought that was more to do with buffering the videos more slowly than loading the site

i always play youtube videos with mpv by copying the url
slowing down playing the videos in the browser was never an issue

but now opening youtube when you first open firefox really lags

the issue also happens when trying to open youtube studio
to view the comments on your your channel

Did you try firefox adons for mpv? It works for me:

i use wlr-which-key
which is a wayland wlroots keymap manager

this lets me press a keyboard shortcut and get a small heads up display
and then i can press a key and run a command or script

i use vimium on firefox so i press a keyboard shortcut to copy the url for the video to the clipboard
and then use wlr-which-key to copy the url from the clipboard and play the video with mpv

Thanks.

I wait around fourteen seconds for a signed-in view of the home page with a very heavily extended profile (excluding uBlock Origin).

With a clean profile: the home page is effectively empty (no history), Trending takes around seven seconds to load.

Some of the slowness is due to me building Electron in the background, and so on.
