<Files ".ht*"> not working as expected

In my /usr/local/etc/apache24/httpd.conf I have the usual
Code:
#
# The following lines prevent .htaccess and .htpasswd files from being
# viewed by Web clients.
#
<Files ".ht*">
    Require all denied
</Files>

However, .htaccess is still viewable in a web browser and is served with status 200 rather than the expected 403 response. I can't find any setting overriding that:
Code:
# grep -FR '.ht*' /usr/local/etc/apache24/
/usr/local/etc/apache24/httpd.conf:<Files ".ht*">
/usr/local/etc/apache24/httpd.conf.sample:<Files ".ht*">

# grep -FR '.htaccess' /usr/local/etc/apache24/
/usr/local/etc/apache24/extra/httpd-default.conf.sample:AccessFileName .htaccess
/usr/local/etc/apache24/extra/httpd-default.conf:AccessFileName .htaccess
/usr/local/etc/apache24/httpd.conf: # AllowOverride controls what directives may be placed in .htaccess files.
/usr/local/etc/apache24/httpd.conf:# The following lines prevent .htaccess and .htpasswd files from being
/usr/local/etc/apache24/httpd.conf.sample: # AllowOverride controls what directives may be placed in .htaccess files.
/usr/local/etc/apache24/httpd.conf.sample:# The following lines prevent .htaccess and .htpasswd files from being

Obviously, I need to fix this.
