ZFS File server with ZFS and NFSv4, what kind of PC to buy?

Hello!

I would like to set up a file server for light home use. I think FreeBSD with ZFS and NFSv4 would suit me well since the client machines are Linux, FreeBSD, MacOS and OmniOS.

MacOS is my wife's laptop so I do not know anything about it, but being UNIX I am *guessing* it will support NFSv4, right?

A simple RAID-1 mirror with two disks would work for me, but I would like to use ECC RAM to stay clear of errors.

Can anyone recommend a simple PC that would satisfy these needs? Thanks!

Haven't tried NFS, but I use vsftpd for a FTP server, and FileZilla every OS (Windows, macOS, Linux, FreeBSD)

Any PC can run vsftpd (used to use a large desktop -> laptop -> now a RPi4 with HDD on USB with FreeBSD 15.1); for ECC I'd buy parts and build it (not sure on a pre-built server to buy)

You really don't need much. My "storage" server is an old Intel Core i5-3470 with 16GB of regular old DDR3 memory. It's been working fine for many years.

my pcengines apu2 with 4GB ECC RAM still serves my usb-connected 3x12TB storage via nfs. If you do not need speed for video editing it just works ... I get around 16MB/s (nfs over wireguard), which is enough for me - I use it for family file sharing, backup and media storage.
