Errors @ StartX prompt for Mate

The errors occur after initial installation of 13.1 with Mate.
errors as follows;
xauth: file /root /root/.serverauth.5381 does not exist
fatal server error xf86OpenConsole:VT_SETMODE VT_PROCESS failed(EE)
unable to connect to X server: connection refused

Some help would be appreciated to track & fix the problem. Thank You.

I'm actually in the Mate desktop, as regular user, but it doesn't accept its password there.
The error message is "failed to execute login command".
I didn't setup the installation in UEFI mode
I've tried to get to a command prompt in Safe mode to try & fix but of no help.
Some more help please.

Has nothing to do with the password. Are you trying to run startx from within Mate?

Tell us exactly what you're doing.
No!
I'm trying to login to the displayed Mate desktop with it's provided user/password login cell.

Try first with a display-manager disabled.
Ie.
Code:
slim_enable="NO"

For instance .xinitrc of a regular user,
Code:
exec openbox
Then startx

What's in your ~/.xinitrc?
I don't seem to have a way to get into xinitrc because running the system goes straight to the non-working mate desktop?
I've tried the welcome screen options, including safe mode, but they don't take me to a command line environment.

CTRL-ALT-F1, F2, F3, etc. Typing console as the username in SLiM should bring up an Xterm (if you have xterm installed), that's also usable.

Thanks Sir Dice;
The problem was a missing xinitrc 'exec' line. How could I, silly me!
I now have two fully working systems with desktops-Mate & Gnome.
Hooray, Hooray! Life's worth living again!
