Easy Peasy Fresh Install

I just wanted to hand out some flowers. I just completed my first in many years fresh install with 15.1-RELEASE. It was super easy. I'll throw in that this install was a dual boot along side a Windows 10 install on a laptop. No problems whatsoever.

I had just completed a pkg-basification of 14-X. That was a little bit of a challenge but completed satisfactorily. I decided that upon cleaning up after that effort, I would never really know what kind of cruft I had accumulated after years and years of upgrades. It was also obvious that the problem between the keyboard and chair was carrying along practices that were old when dirt was new. I decided to start fresh.

I am completely satisfied. Well done!

Every once in a while, I see someone make some dumb claim about the FreeBSD installer. It works so well. Please don't ever try to make a pretty one. Please don't ever insist that Foo-Desktop be a part of the installer. Getting XFCE back up and running after installing 15.1-RELEASE took me all of a few keystrokes. In the end, this tiny amount of additional work is actually a good thing for users.

Having wiped out all of my dotfiles, I have some configuring to do. I'm happy to get re-acquainted. I'm in my 30th year as a user.

Oh look. I just scrolled down and saw something about an "Outdated Mess." Gotta take a peek at that.

Yes, a plain install takes me 6 minutes. I timed it once. Gui installers have their place I guess, but the TUI (or is it curses?) FreeBSD install is fine for me.

Come to think of it, if one is not going to install many instances, the installer is not so important, because it's something one has to deal with just a few times. And if one is going to perform many installations, the leaner and quicker the installer the better. Ergo, graphical installers are a bad idea invented by some Linux enthusiast believing they would bring about "the year of the Linux desktop."

I think I deserve a round of applause.

What are you using for managing the dual boot? I'm interested in different solutions, but for now I'm just using two separate drives and use the EFI boot manager of the motherboard.
