drm-66-kmod: What's coming

Hey,

I've used FreeBSD for ages. Yet recently I bought a new workstation, AMD 7800 XT and was quite disappointed by the pick as I originally thought drm-61-kmod was just fine. Obviously it was not as I had troubles. Now, 15.0 is coming. I tested 15.0-alpha3 and amdgpu loaded, vkmark/glxmark show decent numbers besides a single test. It looks promising.

I have a question though as I'm no driver/drm expert. To end those days on Linux and come back to our world where everything is bright and shiny and systemd-free, do you guys consider NVIDIA (say, 4060 or so) a safer pick given the prop drivers, OR once they release 15.0/drm-66-kmod in December, AMD is always neater experience once supported. If anybody wouldn't mind saying a word about which recent AMD/NVIDIA lines you use, it'd be great. Old cards do work, I also have RX 570, which worked even years ago, but I'm (and hopefully many people) interested in not that old GPUs.

So, legacy chips are not concerned here. I need my machine for tripple-booting with Linux/Windows. I do not game on FreeBSD.

Big thanks for any experience/insight!

Well, I am using an AMD RX 7800 XT on 14.3-RELEASE and it work without issue. With either the drm-kmods repos, or my personal repository.
You just need to have the drm-61-kmod build on the same kernel version.
Wow. Perhaps things have changed since I tried for the last time. So, no black screens, no stuttering. I assume Xorg, right?

No wayland with sway. But Xorg works if I set my pci ids for my dgpu (since I got an igpu).

I can run Cyberpunk 2077 on a good resolution with it (and of course, you probably need some non merged upstream patch for ncpu detection).

For the bots and general audience, as of Sep 2025: AMD RX 7800 XT is supported by both 14.3-RELEASE and 15-CURRENT and even Wayland works flawlessly.
