do you feel in last year to now that google sloppified their search engine?

well google introduced AI search from a while and google search is not the same

i feel results are more generic now than what it used to be and even AI use some resources to answer me that sometimes not even listed in results i can go to (or listed after some page maybe 3 or 4)

does anyone feel the same?

Personally, I'm very happy with it and use it a lot now, whereas before I wasn't using it at all because SEO only put out links to buy useless stuff.

I find it really good for getting quick answers to simple questions, provided they’re reasonably well-phrased. Plus, it saves me from having to go to Wikipedia...

AI search is nice i use it as well , i just feel that they sloppified results if you just want to search instead of using AI

I don't. Because I've stopped using google about a decade ago, since its search results were terrible even back then.

sorry i dont calcutate.
i dont understand what you said so i will assume you mean that you did not understand me

what i meant that it is ok if i do search to know answer i need and go away but it is not ok to try to weaken search to me (whaever to let me do more queries to use their AI) or give better resources to AI to answer me well while you do not show them for me in search results to force me to use AI (what i noticed multiple times)

I can still get info from 1st page with Google, but I think it got worse a couple years before they added AI results on-top.

I consider AI results the same top-spam that'd have advertising spots if I didn't have an adblocker; I don't accept that info/response even if it looks right on accidental quick-glance :p (if it looks like the answer I still scroll down for a website)

Kind-of related, but environmentalist should be questioning Google before local datacenters :p

On-top of every search likely taking more processing power to generate those top AI responses, Google's cool with storing useful videos like this while using environmental resources.

It shouldn't be corporate centralized. Google would have never existed if sharing information was really free and anonymous.

What is strange is that Google gives very different results - despite the same settings - depending on platform: Firefox on Unix, old Edge on Windows, or new Edge.

Best results are currently on Windows with recent Edge releases.

Google got bad like 10 years ago.
Before, question with two or more "conditions" got parsed well (sometimes it needed help with "+" sign) and the results were helpful.
Example:
Q: "script PowerCLI setting vlan parameter"
A: StackOverflow thread with that exact problem

Then suddenly it just picked the few key words like Linux and VirtualBox and pointed you to generic threads on Reddit about both topic but separately. Plus ton of links for paid courses on Linux.

As of now Gemini gives you very good answers. Links/sources are mostly tangential BS tho.
Brave Leo works well enough too with added benefit the searches are anonymous. Google would
a] bombard me with advertising regarding the search topic for weeks
b] It would use it as context for my other questions, derailing itself.

Why do you still use Google? There are good alternatives: brave search, duckduckgo, startpage. I use brave search.
I use Startpage, but since it pulls its results from Google, if Google performs poorly, Startpage will suffer too, even though it is not directly linked to an llm or providing llm-generated results upfront. It is like the discussion around Firefox going full AI with its new CEO: if you gear your application or product toward llm usage, those of us who do not use llm are going to have a worse experience.

I already use something else but google is default for almost all browsers so i use if when i want to fast search and device is not mine or new install

Basically what's SKull said.
I never understand why Google as a search engine is so used and liked by people.
It is default and people just use it and go away

Because it works. I had DuckDuckGo on my phone and deleted it because it's rubbish: slow and inefficient. What I don't get is the whole obsession with privacy, considering everyone posts photos of their every move on every social network imaginable...

I used Duck image search, because it let you download the source picture from preview.
Also I avoid Google on Android because it bombards me with advertising for the topic afterwards. Let's keep it to rolex and viagra.

Privacy is something important (even if you post on social media , you post what you want but those make profile with public and private things) anyway duckduckgo is far from private , anything you can NOT host locally and is open source is far from private , even things that you host locally send telementry making them not 100% private
