Danger.

I don't try to support or defend the tobacco. But not agree with "give you absolutely nothing". There is something positive but at high price.
Sorry 6502, I can't agree. I'm not a smoker either, thank god. What smoking definitely will do is shorten your life and very likely lead to a lot of terrible personal suffering. I've seen it up close in hospital, they never tell you about that part. There's nothing like spending a few nights in the same room as someone with advanced lung cancer. You might as well try to convince me that fentanyl or heroin have some beneficial value (outside of the operating theatre that is). Nope. Absolutely not. They give you nothing.

It's an addictive weapon used against you by the manufacturers to get their hands on whats in your wallet, nothing more. We shall have to agree to disagree on this one.

Whereas alcohol in moderation, sure, I like to have an occasional beer with friends as much as anyone. I've even been known to make homebrew :). Of course if it gets a hold on you that is terrible too. Luckily it never bit me that hard.

(Great username by the way... I used to write 6502 assembler. 😁 Which reminds me of this great site http://visual6502.org/ )

I won't give any strict advice, since I'm not a staunch opponent of tobacco and alcohol.
I don't think that if someone smokes nearby, you should immediately put on an oxygen mask.
Or if someone drinks nearby, run away.
But an overdose of booze washes out the brain and kills the liver.
If you smoke often and a lot, they'll cut off your legs in old age (vascular problem).
I used to drink a lot - my liver got very big.
I didn't go on a binge, but once I drank cognac with an energy drink, and got something like a mild microstroke:
I was walking and I was staggering like a drunk. It went away without treatment. I just survived. I had to live through that too.
I smoked 7-8 cigarettes a day and I was often haunted by a cough.
Until we are 70-80 years old, the body will somehow cope, but then - no.
You will feel worse later.
I wish you to smoke less and drink less.
I drank not the best quality alcohol, and survived. In Belgium, I hope you do not go to informal
establishments where they sell counterfeit alcohol.
I have consumed a lot of counterfeit alcohol and tobacco. We have corruption that turns a blind eye to the fact
that people are poisoned with low-quality alcohol, which is diluted with water.
We call this vodka. To hell with such vodka.
And sometimes I don’t have enough money for all these pleasures.

They offered you good boots! In Belgium, they have not yet introduced a tax on forest air. You have good places.
Take 3 cigarettes, not a pack. That’s what I did. This is so that you don’t die from lack of habit and don’t climb a pine tree.
Habit, addiction just can’t go away.
When you're 10 km away from a tobacco and alcohol shop, there's only one thing to do - build a hut and cook soup over a fire.
I think you can do it.

In my area they've legalized marijuana usage. Now apartment complexes are posting signs about the smell and forbidding smoking it in the apartments. Some are saying they can't stand to sit next to someone who is a heavy smoker cause they stink. My son's wife has a relative that, when they visit him, he tends to light up and it gives him a headache so they leave.

I don't think I could stand it. I hear they've done something like that in Germany too. I really doubt your lungs see much difference between one form of smoke or another, it's all smoke. You might as well go and stick your head over a bonfire. I think France has just banned all outdoor smoking, which I highly approve of. Australia has gone further and banned all vapes unless you get them on prescription. Vapes can cause a lot of lung damage too, we have schoolkids hospitalised from vaping in britain.

A major problem in britain is wood burning stoves in residential areas. In the winter there can be times when the air stinks of wood smoke, it's terrible. I don't know how it's legal, it's a major health risk.

Everyone needs to be very aware of and watch out for asbestos too. All types. You only need to inhale a few fibres to lead to mesothelioma. Trust me, it's worse than you can possibly imagine. I've seen that up close too. Please be very, very careful with asbestos.

Living in Belgium here. Did you know in whole world we have the lowest number of poor people.
The median of income is higher than in America the land of the free.
Drawback we pay high taxes.
Do you have a universal health care system? Is it paid for out of taxes or do you have to take insurance? Does everyone have access?

Last time I checked, Banff was in Canada and not the us of a. As much as some few people would like that. Germany also has universal insurance, you can opt for private insurance but that is cheap in the beginning but very expressive later in life.

I don't really mind paying my taxes, I am buying infrastructure and social peace with it. Nobody needs to rob a bank to pay for the ambulance.

You could do with those Hanwag's up there :). Wow, I got to stop gassing on this forum.... 😂

That's something many people refuse to understand, no matter you view at and compare real countries, or use math to prove it:
The lower the taxes, the poorer the country.
And vice versa: You want a rich country, you need high taxes.
I already see the shitstorm:"No!..." As I said: refuse the truth, even if it's obvious proven with math and real countries.
The result is
I am buying infrastructure and social peace with it. Nobody needs to rob a bank to pay for the ambulance.
And you can move freely everywhere in public, go everywhere, while in "the land of the free" the rich cage themselves up ("gated community") and cannot park their cars everywhere.:-/

Rich people always whine, they pay too much taxes, otherwise they leave. I always say: Let them go!
Where they wanna go?
Most of the countries in this world are exactly like what they want:
Low taxes for the rich, but privileges for them. So, free choice to go! Which continent? southern or northern hemisphere? hot, cold, coast, continental, tropical, desert, jungle,...? Free choice to pick!
Yes, I see: In most of this countries there are no roads like in germany, no reliable power, or water supply, high speed internet...medical treatment is not that good, that even their leaders, and rich people come to europe for it. But instead garbage, poor, and not seldom starving people everywhere... Ain't it what they want?
Of course not! They want to live in Denmark, Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxemburg, Norway, Austria, Germany, France,... of course. Well, bad news guys: Those are all countries with high taxes, mandatory health insurance, and social plans. And, as I said above, the best ones have the highest rates!
You wanna live there? You wanna have all that? You have to pay for it! What's not to understand about that?
And that's neither socialism nor communism, that's just common sense, math, reality and a bit democracy.
Does everyone have access?
Everybody who pays the insurance, which are mandatory.
If you're not in the insurance you need to pay the bills in full by your own, of course.
And if you cannot guarantee you can pay, you get basic emergency treatment, only.
As like everywhere else: You want something, you need to pay for it.

If you're not in the insurence you need to pay the bills in full by your own, of course
If you are on the dole, they pay your insurance. Having to pay out of your own pocket is pretty hard to come by. I only know of two such cases, and they are really in that position for their own decisions.

I know. I wasn't really thinking of people having no insurance at all (being in some social plan also covers at least basic treatment, so if you're on dole, you're also insured.), but more of people from outside europe, since within europe most of the countries' insurances cover treatments in other countries.
But even to explain the healthcare system of a single country alone is way too complicated to explain it briefly within a short post, and cover everything.
