Solved ctrl-O shows dotfiles

I don't know why, probably when I was doing some fiddling, but when I do a ctrl-O to open a listing while in a browser or gimp or anything else, the listing of files and directories now shows all the .dotfiles, too. I've forgotten how to change that.

Right-click on a file, uncheck "Show hidden files"

Depending on the DE (Desktop Environment) you are using, there might me a keyboard shortcut to turn on / off showing hidden files. In Xfce (default setup) it is Ctrl-H.

A good question.

GTK+ 2.0 stores file dialog state in ~/.config/gtk-2.0/gtkfilechooser.ini. GTK+ 3.0 in dconf: dconf write /org/gtk/settings/file-chooser/show-hidden false
