[BSDCan 2026 Day 1] VPP on FreeBSD - Building high capacity networks

Time: Wednesday, 09:00 – 12:00
Presenter: Massimiliano Stucchi

VPP is a recent addition to FreeBSD, enabling it to be used for high capacity networks, delivering high transfer capabilities, and making FreeBSD a good alternative to many networking operating systems. In this tutorial we will introduce all the concepts around VPP, discussing how to configure it from scratch to build a network, and with the help of BGP, OSPF and Babel from the BIRD Routing daemon, we will build a bigger network, and interconnect all the participants in a lab. This tutorial is indicated for those who would like to understand more about how to leverage FreeBSD for networking in the 21st century.

Are you planning to attend this session? For those looking to modernize their networking stack, what specific performance bottlenecks are you currently trying to solve with FreeBSD? Let’s use this space to discuss VPP integration and the future of FreeBSD in high-capacity routing environments.

Convenience streams will be available on the FreeBSD Discord:
