[BSDCan 2026 Day 1] Build Your Own Secure Private Cloud with FreeBSD

Time: Wednesday, 09:00 – 12:00
Presenter: Nils Imhoff

The tutorial shows users how to set up a "Private Cloud" and NAS solution by using only native FreeBSD operating system features. The session teaches users to merge essential system elements which will create an operational server framework. We will cover ZFS storage design, network isolation using VNET/PF, service orchestration with Jails (BastilleBSD/jail.conf), and automated maintenance/backups.

Course Roadmap:
  1. Basic Server Setup: ZFS storage and hardening.
  2. Networking: VNET, virtual switches, and PF firewall rules.
  3. Jails: Resource limiting and template creation.
  4. Examples: Nginx/HAProxy reverse proxies and Nextcloud deployment.
  5. Maintenance: ZFS-based backup automation and update strategies.
Prerequisites: A laptop with an SSH client

This sounds like the ultimate "homelab" deep dive. Are you attending? Whether you are looking to move away from cloud dependencies or just want to master native FreeBSD orchestration, what part of this workflow are you most excited to implement? Share your thoughts and any questions you have for Nils before the session begins!
