Message from xfce4-session-4.16.0_1:

This port installs a startup file for xscreensaver but it is
disabled by default. This is so because the XFCE metaport
installs xfce4-screensaver to autostart and having both enabled
causes conflicts.

If you want to change the screen saver being used and enable
xscreensaver please go to the Session and Startup settings, and in
the Application Autostart tab enable only the relevant screensaver:

Screensaver -> to enable xscreensaver
XFCE Screensaver -> to enable xfce4-screensaver
Then reboot, xfce4 starts fine so works.

Then
Code:
# pkg update && pkg upgrade

Your packages are up to date.
Everything works fine and xfce4 loads automatically as well as did back in the day:

freezr I recommend you to do the same, modify "/usr/local/etc/pkg/repos/FreeBSD.conf" then "freebsd-update -r 13.1-RELEASE upgrade".
Then run "# pkg clean -a" and "# cd /usr/ports && make clean" to free space.
Issue solved.

You should also do

freebsd-version -ruk

to make sure your running kernel, installed kernel, and userland are all 13.1p1. If you followed the upgrade steps including two reboots you should be fine.

You've switched your binary packages repository from the latest to quarterly, so you might hit the issue again at some point.

Hope they fix the issue before reaches stable, already has been reported. Yes I rebooted at least twice:
Code:
freebsd% freebsd-version -ruk
13.1-RELEASE-p1
13.1-RELEASE-p1
13.1-RELEASE-p1

i found now a partial and temporary solution in Vmware player VM freebsd 13.1-p1, after i'm able to ssh'ing inside VM and launch Xorg :0 -configure i tryed to setting mouse keyboard and videocard ,vmmouse like mouse , keyboard kbd with variant and layout, and 'cos vmware card didn't work ,before i prove with scfb and then modesetting, this one look good ..."sudo cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf" i disabled lighdm and gdm working with enlightenment and gnome like DE, and after reboot look i can login with console and launch startx, i wrote .xinitrc with "exec --dbus-launch --exit-with-session enlightenment_start",sure one can also put exec gnome-session or startxfce4 if we need, it's not like use vmware 3D driver but can use resolution 1920x1080 and do my stuff again waiting for a solution... :-/
So you basically modify xorg.conf to not use any "vboxdriver", isn't it? ?

So you basically modify xorg.conf to not use any "vboxdriver", isn't it? ?
i followed the suggestions by bugzeo and yours and rollbacked repos from latest to quarterly ,before i had tried to prove virtualbox-ose-additions-nox11 but result is the same, ever vboxservice didn't get proper functionality, so then after i just changed xorg.conf and removed lightdm & lightdm-gtk-greeter look gdm was good and put vmware like card ,just in ~/xorg.conf.new and installed xf86-video-vmware to enable upper resolutions like 1920x1080@32,vboxvideo was max 1024x786,800x600 .etc..also virtualbox-ose-additions-6.1.36 didnt work like 6.1.36_1,then tried startx and gnome DE work properly ...i used Xfce4 and "gnome-stuffs"..but i believe there's to found a solution about vboxservice and kernel-mod,there is just a temporary "patch" ..is not only in Virtualbox this issue also in VMware player, look there're errors in modules configuration by Xorg:)

xedos832 My error was not taking a snapshot when I saw a xorg update, therefore I couldn't roll back. This is issue is taking quite time to be fixed. I'd like to file a report but I don't have any meaningful information to offer. Before the latest upgrade I was, at least, able to get a mismatched warning between Xorg and the Vbox module. ?

well i done it I think is better to take a snapshot of all importants changes occured to the VM,but in this case i prefered just try to resolve and sure it is hard to be fix :(...look other VM with kde-Plasma and sddm like display-manager is different approach to resolve and I have both ports and packages ...and small free space

freezr can't you re-install 13.1 systems and pkgs WITH the reinstall overwrite of default configuration files? Maybe that's the issue.
My vm is virtualbox not sure it with vmware happens the same the driver is different.
Maybe you should disable all autostart of login manager just display the tty login then use startx like I did with my fresh install. Search for my posts.

If you get still the black screen (BUT you get the initial dmesg debug info when booting) I recommend to uninstall all X manager and software, so doesn't even try to start. Then try to force reinstall 13.1 and pkg, install the same versions as on my log on previous posts, should work.

xedos832 yeah what I do after a fresh install of any vm, take immediately a snapshot, and after any upgrade check that it boots everything, then take a new snapshot without deleting the older one until it's safe to be removed. Also copying the entire folder of the vm to another drive is a good practice, since few times in the past got a broken vms when removing previous snapshots or starting the vm from a different host OS which changed things.

i lost just a couple of hours of my time,it isn't true ?almost five or six ,and after rollback of all softwares to quarterly branch i can reinstall virtualbox-ose-additions, use vmware like videocard and "manipulating" xorg.conf.new,important ,using also VMSVGA by vmware in VBox,and sddm launch its greeter...there is still a problem with sddm that look didn't launch xfce4 or kde, but with .xinitrc and startx can look this gorgeous Desktop?

I see so you both rolled back but this is a temporary solution, we should fix this now otherwise the next quarterly release we will have everything broken again without a solution... ?

yeah, you have "reason to sell" ,but i think it is only thing we can do, then is freeBsd developer's staff that can check and resolve bugs. If you believe how have you said before you could post a bugzilla report, and collect more infos you can, to simplify their job..i hope you will can use your VM like me with GUI, only reason i changed quarterly branch to latest is to have virtualbox-guest-additions updated of the same VirtualBox version in host system ...and we are lucky if we could solve the problem even if temporarily in two days, at least in my case...if you can console, now I'm fighting with another problem, much more difficult, using Win pro inside a VM in VMwareplayer and FreeBsd like guest with Hyper-V,and look keyboard didn't works after i installed xorg like did before in the console, look to be an old issue didn't resolved until now;)

I think it is definitely broken, I downloaded the very last ISO, installed xorg and vbox-ose, modified the RC.CONF and it worked fine; I changed the repo from quarterly to latest and I got the black screen. I didn't find the issue but I was able to replicate it!

you seem to be stubborn, like and more than me?..a suggestion when you are installing FreeBsd use ever ZFS like file system can take a snapshot inside the machine and resilvering and scrubbing if something go wrong add a new HDD or more, to resize and grow file system, zettabyte file system is more flexible, and permit to you to manage data safely...and remember before to do important changes take a snapshot with VBox. Good Luck?

You the missed the point here, before to updated I didn't take a snapshot, otherwise I would had lockt the packages. Unfortunately rolling-back packages didn't work either, so there is an issue and it is better having it fixed.

Not read the whole thread, but have you tried compiling the ose-additions? Since pkg's are currently still compiled against 13.0 afaik, it may help to manually compile against 13.1 (just a guess).

well before changes repo from latest to quarterly you should take a snapshot, and also after, this is the point ..i'm afraid; then remember to do what i wrote ? ? ?..change default VGA virtual card to VMSVGA reinstall virtualbox-ose-additions-6.36.1 and put : sudo sysrc vboxguest_enable="YES" ,and sudo sysrc vboxservice_enable="NO", vbox services didn't have proper functionality, and disable Display manager temporarily, gdm_enable="NO" or other sddm for example, don't use lightdm, anyway. And then su -, write your root password, Xorg :0 -configure ,give to you an error but wrote the file /root/xorg.conf.new open it with: nano /root/xorg.conf.new add where is card0 :driver "vmware" and if you want adjust kbd, keyboard add Option "XkbModel" "modelyouwant", Option "XkbVariant" "variantyouwant",and Option "XkbLayout" "layoutyouwant", in the final SubSection after Depth 24 ,write under ,this: Modes "1920x1080", or resolution you want use if is upper, then save with control + x.reboot or shutdown -r now, and look if when you launch :sudo X -config /root/xorg. conf.new which kind of error wrote Xorg ,it is should write "no screen found", copy :sudo cp /root/xorg.conf.new ~/ . Then: sudo nano .xinitrc ,write exec startxfce4 or exec gnome-session , or exec --dbus-launch --exit-with-session startplasma-x11, for Kde, same thing for .xsession. "sudo nano .xsession" if you didn't have them, just type:sudo touch ~/.xinitrc and sudo touch ~/.xsession. Important in /etc/rc.conf dbus_enable="YES",moused_enable="YES" and for /etc/fstab : proc /proc procfs rw,late 0 0 , tmpfs /tmp tmpfs rw,late,mode=1777 0 0, fdescfs /dev/fd fdescfs rw,late 0 0. type sudo sysrc gdm_enable="YES",or display-manager you use...try again with startx ever as user, if Xorg launch display correctly open a terminal and reboot,if not ,check if there are config file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf or /usr/local/etc/X11/xorg.conf and move or remove them...try to type sudo X config ~/xorg.conf.new ,ever to check which kind of error didn't launch display

Maybe somebody should report this issue to virtualbox forums/community and bug tracker:
it's not a virtualbox bug, freeBSD compile itself this package, you didn't use virtual cd-rom to install virtualbox-guest-additions ,reason one, also in Vmware player didn't work and so we need to rolled back from latest branch to quarterly there, and open-vm-tools didn't change its version ,raeson two.;)

now I'm fighting with another problem, much more difficult, using Win pro inside a VM in VMwareplayer and FreeBsd like guest with Hyper-V,and look keyboard didn't works after i installed xorg like did before in the console, look to be an old issue didn't resolved until now

Oh I see what I missed, however I need the vbox service enabled because I rely on some host folders. My mistake wasn't not taken a snapshot when I saw xorg was going to be updated... More than 3 weeks ago. In the meantime I am using my Linux VM; but I filed a bug report, at least I know how to reproduce the issue.
